Microdermabrasion & Dermaplaning FAQs

Does dermaplaning make facial hair grow back thicker or darker?
No. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair at the surface and never touches the follicle, so it cannot change hair colour, thickness or growth rate — those are set by genetics and hormones below the skin. What people notice is that a hair cut straight across has a blunt tip instead of a naturally tapered one, so it can briefly feel coarser as it grows out. Within a couple of weeks it returns to its normal soft texture.
Which is better for me, microdermabrasion or dermaplaning?
It depends on your main concern. Microdermabrasion is usually chosen for rough texture, congestion and dullness — it resurfaces with gentle abrasion and suction. Dermaplaning is usually chosen when peach fuzz, flaking and makeup application are the priority. Many clients alternate between the two, and some combine them in one visit.
Is there any downtime after microdermabrasion or dermaplaning?
Typically minimal. Most clients go straight back to work or plans the same day. Mild pink flushing, warmth or slight tightness may last a few hours, and skin can feel drier than usual for a day or two.
How often should I repeat these treatments?
Both are commonly scheduled every three to four weeks, which loosely follows the natural skin cell turnover cycle. Repeating sooner does not speed results and can over-exfoliate. Some clients start closer together to work on texture, then settle into maintenance every four to six weeks.
Can I have these treatments with active acne or rosacea?
Active inflammatory acne, cystic breakouts, open lesions or actively flaring rosacea are usually reasons to choose a different approach — abrading or blading over inflamed skin can aggravate it. In those cases we often suggest a HydraFacial or an appropriately selected peel instead.
How far before a wedding or event should I book dermaplaning?
Five to seven days before is the sweet spot, and ideally after you have already had at least one treatment so you know how your skin responds. That leaves room for any temporary pinkness or dryness to settle. Booking the day before a major event is not something we recommend for a first-time client.

How Microdermabrasion Works

A handheld device passes over the skin using a gently abrasive surface — most often a diamond-tipped wand — combined with controlled suction. The abrasion loosens the outermost layer of dead cells while the vacuum lifts that debris away in the same motion. Nothing is injected, no acid is applied, no anaesthetic is needed. It works only on the stratum corneum, the very top layer, and that is deliberate: staying superficial smooths the surface and encourages turnover without the recovery of deeper resurfacing. A full face takes about 30 minutes.

How Dermaplaning Works

A sterile surgical-grade blade is held at a shallow angle against taut skin and drawn across the surface in short, controlled strokes, removing dead cells and fine vellus hair at the same time. There is no cutting and no numbing, and for most clients no discomfort beyond a light scraping sensation. Because a blade reaches places a machine cannot, it is precise around the jawline, the sides of the nose and the upper lip. A session runs 30 to 45 minutes. This should only be performed by a trained, licensed professional — home tools carry real risk of nicks and uneven removal.

What Each One Addresses

Microdermabrasion: dullness, congestion and clogged pores, rough or grainy texture, mild surface pigmentation, poor product absorption, very fine surface lines. Dermaplaning: peach fuzz, dry flaky patches, makeup application — the difference clients mention most — an immediately smoother finish, and better product penetration. Neither addresses deeper wrinkles, laxity or established pigment; those need a peel, microneedling or Morpheus8.

Aftercare & How Often

Sun protection is the priority: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning, reapplied outdoors, with a hat or shade if you will be out. Pause retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide and scrubs for several days. Keep it simple and hydrating for the first 48–72 hours. Avoid heat and sweat for about 24 hours, and hold off on waxing until your provider says it is fine. Both treatments are commonly repeated every three to four weeks; consistency matters more than frequency.

Who Should Wait

Active inflammatory acne, cystic breakouts, open lesions, actively flaring rosacea, facial eczema, cold sore outbreaks or recent sunburn are generally reasons to postpone or choose an alternative. Recent isotretinoin use, certain prescription retinoids and recent injectables also affect timing. Tell your provider your full routine and history — if these are not right for you, we will say so and recommend something that is.

A Cleaner Canvas, Same Day

No fuzz, no flaking, makeup that sits flat instead of clinging. The gentlest way to look brighter without downtime — book your free skin analysis and we will tell you which of the two fits your skin. Clients visit us from Frisco and Dallas every week.
